One of the best ways to improve your finances is to find ways to earn more money. And who doesn’t want more money!?!

But, earning extra money in the winter has its own challenges. You’re dealing with the cold and snow, two things that may make you want to stay indoors. But the winter also provides many opportunities, especially for those who are willing to face the elements.

Let’s take a look at several ways to earn more money this winter -- both indoors and out.

One of the best ways to improve your finances is to find ways to earn more money. And who doesn’t want more money!?! Let’s take a look at several ways to earn more money this winter -- both indoors and out.

1 - Shovel snow

If you don’t mind being out in the cold and doing some physical labor, you could make money shoveling snow for others. Many people are willing to hire someone so that they don’t have to do it themselves.

So, knock on some doors and ask around. You can also check Craigslist for those looking to hire. Or advertise your services on Craigslist.

2 - Work as a Tutor

If you know a subject well enough, you can tutor students. You can do it in person with students in your area. Or you can look at companies that hire for online tutoring (allowing you to stay inside where it’s warm).

3 - Take Dogs for Walks

As it gets colder outside, dog owners are less excited about having to take their dogs out for walks. If you love dogs and don’t mind being out in the cold, you could offer up your services as a dog walker.

You can advertise your services on Craigslist and with pet-related businesses (groomers, boarding facilities, pet stores, etc).

4 - Pet Sitting

If you love animals, you might be interested in working as a pet sitter. You can work for yourself or for a pet-sitting company.

5 - Earn Cash Back through Ebates

Ebates allows you to earn cash back as you shop. Simply visit Ebates before you shop online and click through their link to your favorite retailer. When you make a qualifying purchase, you’ll earn cash back.

And, to make it easier, you can install the Ebates extension. When you visit a participating retailer, the extension will ask if you want to activate the cash back offer. This way you never forget and you can earn that cash back.

Ebates offers cash back for purchases made online at numerous retailers, including Amazon, Kohl’s, Macy’s, Shutterfly, Barnes & Noble, Walmart, Groupon, and Expedia.

6 - Work as a Virtual Assistant

Virtual Assistants (or VAs) provide administrative, technical, or creative assistance to clients. Example VA services include email management, blog post writing and scheduling, social media management, editing, and proofreading.

7 - Sell on Etsy

If you’re the creative type, you could sell your products on Etsy. Etsy allows anyone to set up their shop for free. (They then charge a small fee per listing and per sale.)

I’ve purchased numerous things over the years from various Etsy retailers. Our favorite purchase was our wedding rings (not an affiliate link...just love our rings!), which we bought for only $83.

8 - Drive for Lyft or Uber

If you have a vehicle and like meeting new people, you can drive for either Uber or Lyft. Both Uber and Lyft offer ride sharing that connects drivers and riders.

The winter time can be a great time to drive for either service. People may not want to drive themselves or walk too far in the cold.

I worked for Lyft for a little bit and enjoyed my experience. One of the things I liked best was that you can set your own hours. So you can work when you want -- days, nights, or weekends.

9 - Earn Cash Back through Ibotta

Ibotta allows you to earn cash back on items you buy at the store.

Before you go to the store, add offers for products you’ll buy at the store (online or via the app). Head to a participating store and buy those products. Then, take a picture of your receipt.

Right now, new users get a $10 welcome bonus just for signing up and redeeming your first qualifying offer within 7 days of signing up. (Qualifying offers exclude “any brand” or “any item” offers.)

10 - Rent a Spare Room on Airbnb

If you’ve got an extra room (or even a couch), you can make some extra money by renting it out through Airbnb. (Note: Laws vary from city to city. Check your local laws to ensure you're in compliance.)

And you can meet some new people and introduce them to your city.

11 - Check out Craigslist

Another great place to look for part-time and short-term jobs is on Craigslist. Simply go to your city’s Craigslist page. If you’re looking for a part-time job, look under the “Jobs” section for the “part-time” link.

But, if you just want a short-term gig, click on the links under the “Gigs” section. Here, you can find all types of gigs, many lasting just one day.
